3D Modeling and Printing M-Term

Getting Started
Today was the first day of the 3D modeling and printing M-term, mainly getting set up. Our morning consisted of looking at our schedule and figuring out how to write this blog, but it was largely taken up by downloading Fusion 360, our 3D modeling software, which was a long process for some. This was quite frustrating because we couldn't get into the videos and learn the software until the afternoon.
After lunch, we watched some tutorial videos detailing the interface of Fusion 360 and how some tools are used. There are a lot of features and tools so it is a little confusing, but I feel that with some practice it'll start to become a lot easier, plus we are supposed to get mice tomorrow which will make navigation in the software much easier. Also, with the work that we're doing, I don't think that we'll need to use all the crazy features and customization options that are available which will make it more simple and easy to learn and use.

Once we were familiar with the interface we followed along with some tutorial videos to make a lego brick and a beer bottle. We'll do more in the future but the reasoning behind doing these little projects is to get familiar with the tools in Fusion 360 and how to use them. For the lego brick, because it was my first project, it took me some time to get started. I was just fumbling around with the tools and kept on undoing or deleting things as well as messing up steps or not knowing where to find things. After watching more of the video I got the hang of it and was able to complete the lego brick comfortably which was very satisfying and it looked surprisingly good.

The next project, which not everyone got to, was the beer bottle. By this time I was more comfortable with the software, but the project was harder as a beer bottle is not just made of simple objects. I made some mistakes that messed up the whole bottle and forced me to practically restart from the beginning but doing it twice got me even more comfortable with the software. In the end, it looks pretty good and learning how to create simple objects more efficiently is quite rewarding, at least for me.
Overall, I have pretty high hopes for the next couple of weeks seeing as we're already modeling (and hopefully printing tomorrow). I want to see if I can do more than just one individual project, but I'll have to see how it goes.
