Reflecting

Today was the final day of our 3D Modeling and Printing M-Term. My goal for today was to print out my final design, and polish it up (removing supports, cleaning up stray bits of PLA, etc.). Unfortunately, I got to school just before 8:30, so people were already using the printers. Just before lunch, Eli's print finished, and I was able to go. My print was originally going to take 2 hours and 14 minutes, but I had to use the other printer, which meant that my print was going to take 3 hours and 4 minutes. I felt bad about this, because I had already put my print on the list, and I had written 2 hours and 14 minutes. With this change in schedule, Eli was not able to get his third print on the printer, which is my fault, and I feel pretty bad about it.

When my print finished, I took it off the printer, and spent about half an hour cleaning it up. Unfortunately, because of the printing schedule incident. Eli and I had some tension, which was less than optimal, considering he is one of my best friends. I hope that we can break through the tension, and go back to being friendly with each other over the coming days.

Reflecting back on this M-Term, there is a lot that I have enjoyed, and learned. Throughout the course, I have learned how to 3D model, which allowed me to create designs, and develop creations that I was interested in. I also learned a lot about 3D printers, and the various types of printers, and printing methods.  Additionally, I learned a lot about the different materials used in 3D printing, and their various uses. This understanding allowed me to create designs that utilized the various aspects of certain materials, and printing methods. For example, since I wanted my phone design to be solid, I used PLA, which when cooled, is similar to a hard plastic.

I have also really enjoyed this course, beyond just the learning aspect. 3D printing is something that I have been interested in, but never really got into, so I am glad I got this opportunity to delve into this topic. Additionally, this M-Term has been a good bonding experience, as I got to know some people that I had never really talked to before. Overall, I have really enjoyed this M-Term, and would recommend it to anyone.
